Tasks and Responsibilities

The overall aim of the Regional Child Protection in Emergency Advisor for West and Central Africa is to support national emergency teams in the design and implementation of high-quality and cutting-edge child protection in emergency interventions. He/She is responsible for developing the capacities of national emergency and development staffs on the sectoral issues of child protection in emergency. He/She will be expected, with limited support, to lead on sectoral assessment, programme design, monitoring and reporting. The Regional Child Protection in Emergency Advisor will also be expected to feed in the definition and implementation of both the Regional Emergency Strategy and the Global Emergency Handbook. He/She will monitor best practices and lessons learnt identified within/outside the Organization and ensure their integration in SOS program design and implementation. The main tasks and responsibilities of the position are:

Technical expertise and guidance to country teams on the issues of child protection in emergency

  • Ensure the implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of high quality and cutting-edge child protection in emergency programs through direct technical support and guidance to national teams operating on the ground

  • Lead and coordinate the implementation of child protection in emergency assessments on the ground; Draft assessment reports and disseminate findings to regional and national stakeholders

  • Contribute to the design of quality child protection in emergency programmes that are in line with minimum humanitarian and child protection/safeguarding standards

  • Ensure that SOS programs of child protection in emergency are in line with and part of the overall humanitarian response strategy in the countries of intervention

  • Work among the Regional Emergency Team and with national teams to develop high quality concept notes and proposals as well as any other programme documents and tools

    Capacity Building

  • Develop learning needs assessment and capacity building plans for SOS national emergency teams on the ground and partner staff, linking capacity building initiatives to wider opportunities identified via coordination and networks

  • Provide sectoral trainings to SOS national teams and partners

  • Working closely with the Regional HR team, lead on induction and training of new emergency staff in child protection in emergency

    SOS Child Protection in Emergency Strategy and Handbook

  • Support the Head of Emergency in the definition and revision of the Child Protection in Emergency strategy for West and Central Africa

  • Working closely with the Global Emergency team, provide technical support and guidance for the definition and roll-out of the SOS Emergency Handbook at global level

    Regional Child Protection in Emergency Analysis and Coordination

  • Develop an evidence-based, documenting lessons learnt, best practice and case studies to shape regional and in-country strategies and program approaches, and contribute to broader learning within child protection in emergency

  • Participate to Child Protection in Emergency coordination mechanisms at regional level

  • Perform any other task that may be requested by the Head of Emergency for West and Central Africa

    Requirements

  • Extensive experience (at least 5 years) in child protection in emergency

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a management position, preferably in the management of child protection in emergency programs on the ground

  • Dynamic personality, self-assured, pro-active, problem-solving, not scared to face challenges and stress of working environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills.

  • Strong IT skills

  • Sound organizational skills

  • Autonomous, reactive and able to deal with priorities

  • Extremely rigorous and precise, attention to details

  • Practical and solutions oriented

  • Fluency in written and spoken French and English mandatory

  • Willingness to do International Travels in emergency countries within the region at short notice

  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with local and international stakeholders

  • Previous experience of working in child protection in emergency with an INGO in West and Central Africa is an asset

  • Holding a certificate of trainee of trainees on child protection in emergency is an asset

  • Experience of remote management is an asset
