Countries: Burkina Faso, Niger
Organization: Norwegian Refugee Council
Closing date: 2 Feb 2021

Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world, situated at the heart of the Sahel. Niger has a lack of state capacity to respond to humanitarian crises and is also bordered by countries affected by conflict and instability (Chad, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso and Libya in the far North). Then it is part of the migration route towards Northern Africa. Niger recently has been experiencing deterioration in security; rise in cross-border attacks by non-state armed groups – targeting armed forces and community leaders. It has been receiving many refugees from Nigeria, Mali and lately from Burkina Faso.

Burkina Faso has been experiencing an unprecedented rise in violence and humanitarian needs since early 2019. Burkina Faso was a relatively stable country but now the number of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) continue to increase as the government continues struggling to contain the incursions of the non-state armed groups. In January 2019 there were only approximately 20,000 IDPS, now there is estimated to be more than 1,000,000 IDPs and this is expected to continue.

The Central Sahel Countries are experiencing an unpreceded escalation of violence, causing significant displacement of civilians and increasing pressures on already scarce resources and on host communities. To contribute to the humanitarian response, NRC has an operation in Burkina Faso and Niger aimed at addressing humanitarian needs and ensuring protection to the conflict-affected population, including IDPs, returnees, host communities and local communities in the most vulnerable, hard to reach areas.
